Blue-spotted
salamander on the patio; a snag that has fallen in the yard; acorns on the burr
oak; morels at the base of a pine; immature eagle on the brush pile; toad at
the back door; wasp nest high in the maple; in the bouncing bet, hummingbird
moths.
Like a suitor he’ll call up the news
to my window on the second floor. I’ll
creep up behind him, studying on the couch, and whisper, through the screen, in
his ear.
We’ll meet at the object of
interest, the words between us few. “Go get your zoom lens,” I’ll say. He’ll say, “Now you have something to write
about!”
I like how nature marries with her
simple, incredible news, how she draws us from separate places, and fashions
one from two.
